In this advanced training module, the participants will gain an understanding for the working principle of an efficient electron spin filter based on exchange scattering at the surface of a thin Fe film. After an introduction based on discussion of literature, the spin-split surface state on Gd will be measured with laser-based photoelectron spectroscopy with and without spin resolution in order to determine the spin polarization of this state.
